Call for Applications: FRIAS Fellowship Program
In the academic year 2014/2015 the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) will organize a one‐year FRIAS Research Focus on "Dynamic Alignments and Dealignments in Global Southeast Asia". As a part of this Research Focus, FRIAS advertises 4 Junior Fellowships and 4 External Senior Fellowships.
“Dynamic Alignments and Dealignments in Global Southeast Asia” examines how global flows and challenges impact on the actors, patterns and processes that drive social and institutional alignments and dealignments in a strategically important, economically vibrant and politically volatile region. It explores at different organizational levels – international, national, local – and from an interdisciplinary perspective how cultures of cooperation are negotiated and by which encounters and narratives changing alignments between nations as well as diverse ethnic, economic, religious, political and professional groups are framed.
The Research Focus has been constituted by Sociocultural Anthropology, Political Science, Economics and East Asian History. Proposals on topics such as “Democratizing Regional Cooperation in Southeast Asia,” “Negotiating Academic Cultures: International Cooperation in the Social Sciences,” “Environmental Cooperation between Singapore and China,” and “Cooperation and Conflict at the Subnational Level” are welcome, but any proposal otherwise fitting the umbrella theme is eligible.
Focus conveners are Prof. Jürgen Rüland (Political Science, juergen.rueland@politik.uni‐freiburg.de), Prof. Judith Schlehe (Anthropology, judith.schlehe@ethno.uni‐freiburg.de), Prof. Sabine Dabringhaus (East Asian History, sabine.dabringhaus@geschichte.uni‐freiburg.de) and Prof. Günther Schulze (Economics, guenther.schulze@vwl.uni‐freiburg.de).
For this Research Focus FRIAS advertises 4 Junior Fellows and 4 External Senior Fellows. Fellowships can be provided for a maximum of 12 months. Senior scholars may also apply for shorter periods of no less than 3 months. Start of the program is 1 September 2014. The Focus seeks to form a vibrant interdisciplinary research group of international scholars with the objective of strengthening Southeast Asian Studies and working on topics related to the umbrella theme mentioned above.
Fellows will participate in colloquia, workshops and other activities facilitating the output of high‐quality publications. The Junior and External Senior Fellowships pertaining to the Research Focus are co‐funded by an EU mobility program which requires an open call for all funded fellowships and a review of applications.
The deadline for applications is 10 January 2014. The short application period is consequence of the fact that the EU program has only been approved this fall. We would be delighted if you would consider an application.
