Call for Applications: FRIAS Fellowship Program

In the academic year 2014/2015 the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) will organize a one‐year FRIAS Research Focus on "Dynamic Alignments and Dealignments in Global Southeast Asia". As a part of this Research Focus, FRIAS advertises 4 Junior Fellowships and 4 External Senior Fellowships.

First and Second Collaborative Colloquium on November 18 and December 4

The first and second Collaborative Colloquia of the semester will focus on a set of related topics. The first colloquium on the 18th of November will discuss the role of "Music and Fieldwork ind Southeast" Asia. The second colloquium on the 4th of December zooms in on the question of "Why is Burmese pop music so bland and so popular". The second colloquium will be presented by Prof. Ward Keeler of UT Austin.

DAAD program extension 2014-2017: "From Tandem to Teamwork"

Under the new title "From Tandem to Teamwork. A Training Model for Fieldresearch across Cultural and Disciplinary Boundaries" the DAAD approved to support the collaboration between the departments of Anthropology and Political Science at ALU, Freiburg, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta and further Indonesian universities from 2014 to 2017.

Dvora Yanow (Wageningen University) will speak about "Interpretive Research Design", Carol Tan´s (University of London) talk will be on "When Filipina and Indonesian domestic workers sue their employers in Hong Kong" and Raul Cordenillo (The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance) will hold a lecture about "Democratising ASEAN: Reflections of an ex-ASEAN Civil Servant".

On 18 June 2013, Prof. Rüland participated in the hearing organized by the Committee of Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament on “Foreign Policy Considerations in EU Relations with ASEAN and Southeast Asia”, in Brussels.
