In cooperation with Kommunales Kino Freiburg (www.koki-freiburg.de), Southeast Asian Studies at Freiburg University (www.southeastasianstudies.uni-freiburg.de) is organizing a lecture and movie series on the political past and present of Southeast Asia.

During the winter term 2014/2015 the series will focus on the communist history of Southeast Asia and how today’s societies are dealing with the issue. In many countries communist and anti-communist history is either a taboo or still a matter of controversial debates.

We will host monthly roundtable discussions (Collaborative Colloquium on Southeast Asia), where the topics of the movies will be prepared and then watch the films and discuss them in the cinema. The series starts with a guest lecture by Patrick Hesse (Humboldt University Berlin) who will provide us with an overview on “Communism in Southeast Asia”.

Many of the movies we will watch share the fact that they have been or still are under censorship in their countries of origin. Therefore, at the end of the semester we will deal with the issue of freedom of opinion and freedom of media through the exhibition “Medien- und Meinungsfreiheit in Südostasien“ between 16.2.-28.2.2015 which was created by Stiftung Asienhaus. The exhibition will be presented in the gallery of the Alte Wiehrebahnhof. Genia Findeisen (Stiftung Asienhaus) will give an introduction on the topic on 18 February 2015 at 6pm (to be confirmed). The exhibition and the lecture are funded by Stiftung Entwicklungszusammenarbeit Baden-Württemberg (SEZ).
