Maria Denise Nguyen, born in 1988, has recently graduated from the University of Freiburg with a Master's degree in Political Science. In 2011, she received a Bachelor’s degree in social sciences with a minor in economics from Humboldt University Berlin. Her main study and research focus is on good governance, civil society and regionalism in the Asian and Southeast Asian region. She analyzed ASEAN's institutional change towards a political and security community in her Bachelor's thesis. During her work as a practical trainee at the Friedrich-Ebert Foundation, a German non-profit organization, in Hanoi, Vietnam in 2011 she was involved in country-specific projects on gender mainstreaming and legal affairs. 

In her Master's thesis Ms. Nguyen conducted in-depth research on the changing role of international donor assistance and its effects on local civil society organizations in the area of gender equality. As a fellow of the Carlo-Schmid Program, a German Scholarship for outstanding students and graduates, Ms. Nguyen recently worked at the NGO branch of the United Nations' Department of Economics and Social Affairs at the Secretariat in New York. From September 2015 she will continue her work in Hanoi as a trainee at the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in the portfolio and quality management.
