Stefan Seitz, born 1944, earned his Ph.D. in 1970 and finished his Habilitation in 1975 in Freiburg. Since 1980 he is professor of Ethnology at the University of Freiburg. In 1983-84 he was professor pro tempore at the Department of Ethnology at the Free University of Berlin.
He has conducted extensive anthropological fieldwork in Central Africa and Insular Southeast Asia. His research concentrates on transformation processes in hunter-gatherer societies as well as in rural societies in the tropical rainforest. He carried out fieldwork among the Pygmies in Rwanda and the Congo, the Punan of Borneo, the Aeta of Zambales before and after the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, the Batak of Palawan and the Mama-nua in Agusan del Norte/Philippines. He published numerous books and articles about his research topics.
